Who? What? Huh?
Whovians are already hassling self-confessed Who novice Pearl for her lack of knowledge on the long running sci-fi show
DOCTOR Who fans were outraged on Wednesday night when new companion actress Pearl Mackie failed to correctly identify how the Tardis is powered.
Newcomer Pearl, 29, will make her debut as new companion Bill Potts to Peter Capaldi’s The Doctor on Saturday night.
The London born beauty was on The One Show to help promote the upcoming new series when an apparent gaff was made.
In typically thrilling The One Show style, the week night entertainment programme opened with a segment on cruise ship pollution problems in Southampton.

As the cameras cut back to the studio following the VT, presenter Angela Scanlon asked: “Well, Pearl, as Doctor Who’s new companion – what does the Tardis run on? Is it petrol? Is it diesel?”
Looking a little confused, Pearl stammered: “Uh – it’s space engine oil.”
“So no congestion charges?” Angela pressed?
“None of that congestion charge or pollution either. It’s all good,” Pearl replied.
But it was not “all good” as far as rabid Doctor Who fans could see – for Pearl had made an epic mistake with her “space engine oil” declaration.
Indeed, Twitter was quickly awash with angry Doctor Who fans – collectively known as Whovians – expressing rage that Pearl had got such a simple fact wrong.
Oddly, fans were divided on what the Tardis (Doctor Who’s time travelling machine) actually runs on – but their anger was clear for all to see.
“PEARL IT’S ARTRON ENERGY COME OOON #DoctorWho,” raged one furious fan.
“Every single #DoctorWho fan screams the TARDIS is powered by rift energy,” tweeted another.
“UM SCUZ ME TARDIS RUNS ON ARTRON ENERGY GAWD ??#oneshow #DoctorWho,” said another.
However, Pearl at least has a valid excuse for not knowing what fuel the space/time machine uses – as she’s never actually watched the show.
“It wasn’t on when I was a kid. I was part of the Doctor Who-less years. Those 16 years were the first 16 years of my life,” the self-confessed Doctor Who novice explained.
“It came back when I was 16 and I was hanging out in parks and probably doing silly things,” she added.
And it seems show runner Stephen Moffat didn’t mind, as Pearl explained: “I said to Stephen and Brian [Minchin, producer] when I got the job ‘give me the back catalogue! I’d love to watch it all’. And they said ‘Whatever you’re doing, it’s working really well. It would be nice if you could experience things as Bill experiences them as well.’”
Pearl’s moment on The One Show sofa was made further awkward as self-confessed Doctor Who hater Fern Britton was sat beside her.
“I don’t want anyone to take this personally, I did put into Room 101 Doctor Who,” Fern said on the sofa.
“I don’t understand any of it. Doctor Who I think is the most dreary thing,” she said – in a clip from Room 101.
Explaining herself further, Fern told Pearl: “I’m just not a sci fi fiend and never have been. Obviously Doctor Who has been going almost as long as I have so I know it well but it has never captured me.”
While Fern might not believe in a fictional character capable of incredible things, she was on The One Show to promote her upcoming documentary, Fern Britton’s Holy Land Journey in which she makes a pilgrimage to retrace the footsteps of Jesus Christ.
