SHE first shot to fame as teenager Nisha Batra in Brookside and has since gone on to become a familiar face in many TV shows including Casualty.
And now Sunetra Sarker is starring in new drama Ackley Bridge. But who is the actress? Here’s the lowdown…
Who is Sunetra Sarker?
She was born on June 25 1973 in Liverpool to a Hindu family.
Her father is a retired doctor and her mother Bisakha taught Indian classical dance for which she was awarded an MBE.
Sarker studied at Brunel University London and has a degree in French and Information Systems for Business in Europe.
She was married to Nick Corfield, who she first met as a teenager, for ten years and they have a son called Noah, but they divorced in 2014.
She is now dating marketing director Scott Carey.
How did Sunetra Sarker get into acting?
According to her, she never planned to be an actress or go into the profession.
At the age of 13 she was spotted a bus stop by the casting director at Brookside and she ended up playing teenager Nisha Batra for two years from 1988 to 1990 before returning in 2000 for three years.
Sunetra then enrolled in night drama school to get some acting knowledge but always credits cast and crew she has worked with for giving her valuable insight and knowledge into the industry.
What made Sunetra Sarker a household name?
In 2004 she was cast as healthcare assistant Anji Mittel in the Channel 4 comedy No Angels alongside former EastEnders actress Joy Joyner.
Sunetra has said that one of the greatest moments of her career was landing the role which she played until the show came to an end in 2006.
Sunetra was then cast in Casualty as Dr Zoe Hanna in 2007 and she stayed on the show until May 2016.
What else has Sunetra starred in?
Sunetra played Clare Burns on the ITV drama The Chase and has appeared on Doctor Who, Emmerdale and Cold Feet.
In 2007 she took part in Celebrity Masterchef and in 2014 she signed up for Strictly Come Dancing.
She was partnered with Brendan Cole but they were voted out in week ten.
What is Ackley Bridge and who does Sunetra play?
Originally titled The ABC, Ackley Bridge tells the story of a school in a Yorkshire town of the same name.
The story will follow two comprehensive schools that are forced to merge due to budget cuts.
However, trouble arises as one school is predominantly white, while the other is an Asian-led comprehensive – and the communities are for the most part separated from each other.
As a result, the teens lives and cultures are set to be thrown into turmoil as the pupils adjust to their new school mates and way of life.
Sunetra has taken up the role of dinnerlady and busy mum Kaneeza Paracha.
