WHO IS WHO?
The hit sci-fi series finally has it’s first ever female Time Lord
DOCTOR Who fans are still reeling from the news that Peter Capaldi will leave his role as the Time Lord at the end of the current series.
But fans need wail no longer – Jodie Whittaker has been revealed as the 13th Time Lord!
Who is Jodie Whittaker?
Jodie Whittaker, 34, is an English actress from Yorkshire who is known for her work on shows including Broadchurch and Adult Life Skills.
She trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, graduating in 2005.
She made her professional debut as an actress back in 2005, starring in The Storm at Shakespeare’s Globe, London.
When will Jodie become the Thirteenth Doctor?
Peter will step down as the Doctor at the end of the year after starring in one final season, and his regeneration scene is expected to take place during the 2017 Christmas special.
Jodie said in a statement: “I’m beyond excited to begin this epic journey – with Chris and with every Whovian on this planet.
“It’s more than an honour to play the Doctor. It means remembering everyone I used to be, while stepping forward to embrace everything the Doctor stands for: hope. I can’t wait.”
What has Jodie said about becoming first female Doctor?
Jodie told fans not be scared by her gender. She continued: “this is a really exciting time, and Doctor Who represents everything that’s exciting about change. The fans have lived through so many changes, and this is only a new, different one, not a fearful one.”
“There was no persuasion needed. If you need to be persuaded to do this part, you’re not right for this part, and the part isn’t right for you.
“I also think, for anyone taking this on, you have to want to fight for it, which I certainly had to do. I know there will have been some phenomenal actors who threw their hats in the ring.”
Who was in the running to be the next Doctor Who?
Kris Marshall was a favourite and in the run up, according to some sources, he had won the role.
Her critically-acclaimed BBC comedy Fleabag cast Phoebe Waller-Bridge as one of the UK’s rising stars.
Fresh from being cast in the as-yet-untitled Han Solo spin-off film, the Londoner is currently evens on to land another prestigious space (and time) hopping role.
Michaela Coel is the writer and star of award-winning drama Chewing Gum.
Despite denying rumours that she will be taking over the controls of the Tardis any time soon, some serious money was splashed on the rising star.
Tilda was strongly tipped to become the first ever female Doctor Who, a position now filled by Jodie Whittaker.
David Harewood, best known for his roles in Homeland and Supergirl, entered the running late to become the first non-white Doctor but it wasn’t meant to be.
